Lodestar Space, founded by engineers Thomas Santini and Neil Buchanan, aims to address the pressing need for space security. Their innovative solution involves a platform-agnostic robotic system that inspects and repairs satellites and other orbital assets. This approach contrasts with competitors developing entire spacecraft for similar purposes. Lodestar focuses on creating versatile robotic systems, starting with a dexterous robotic arm capable of performing various tasks in space.
The recent funding will support Lodestar’s development and testing efforts. According to reports, the team, which includes advisors like former SpaceX VP Lee Rosen and former Spaceflight CEO Curt Blake, recently conducted successful zero-gravity tests of their system in partnership with MIT and The Aurelia Institute. They aim to demonstrate their robotic arm’s capabilities in orbit by the end of 2025, starting with tasks such as grabbing and releasing target objects.

Lodestar’s strategic roadmap includes developing a flight-ready model of its robotic arm, which is scheduled to fly as a hosted payload on a partner space tug next year. The company also intends to expand its operations to the U.S., seeking to attract attention from the Department of Defense while continuing to leverage the interest shown by the UK government in developing homegrown capabilities for inspecting and repairing vital space assets.
